Spare Room Projects, Brooklyn, NY
Farewell Planet Phantom features new paintings by New York based and Texas born artist Scott Calhoun at the Bushwick project space Spare Room Projects.
From the press release:
“The artist’s paintings document his thought process, and argue for painting as thinking. He uses an exquisitely rich and playful palette, asymmetrically balanced compositions, idiosyncratic marks, and a deep engagement with his materials…
Through each step, Calhoun employs a true economy of means, using what’s at hand in the studio. Although perhaps not readily apparent, each painting is informed by the music, literature, jokes, and conversations with other artists. They are documents of a particular stretch of studio time.
Calhoun received his MFA from The University of Houston and BFA from The University of Texas. A series of small and large-scale works both utilizing a similar process will be presented at this time. The artist has made a Xeroxed limited edition zine available in conjunction with the opening night.”
